What Should You Know About Percentage Calculations?
- ✓ Percentage points and percentages are not the same. If an interest rate goes from 5% to 7%, that is a 2 percentage point increase but a 40% relative increase. ToolsMio helps you calculate both.
- ✓ When calculating discounts, remember that successive discounts do not simply add up. A 20% discount followed by a 10% discount equals 28% total, not 30%.
- ✓ Markup and margin are calculated differently and produce different results. A 50% markup on a $100 cost yields a $150 price, but a 50% margin means the cost is $50 on a $100 price.
- ✓ Percentage change is not symmetric. Going from 100 to 150 is a 50% increase, but going back from 150 to 100 is a 33.3% decrease — not the same percentage.
- ✓ When comparing values of different scales, use percentages rather than absolute numbers for fair comparison. A $10 increase means different things for a $20 item vs. a $1,000 item.
