Tips for Working with Sales Tax

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the net price by the tax rate as a decimal. A $100 item at 8.25% tax costs $8.25 in tax, so the gross total is $108.25.
How do I remove tax from a total (reverse sales tax)?
Divide the tax-included total by 1 plus the rate: a $108.25 total at 8.25% gives $108.25 / 1.0825 = $100 net. The Remove Tax mode on this page does exactly that.
Does this work for VAT and GST?
Yes. VAT (used in the UK and EU) and GST (used in Canada, Australia, and elsewhere) work identically: a percentage added to the net price. Enter your local rate - for example 20% UK VAT or 10% Australian GST.
Why do I need to know the price before tax?
Receipts in many countries show only the tax-included total. Extracting the net price is useful for expense reports, business accounting, claiming VAT refunds, or comparing pre-tax prices across vendors.
Is my pricing data sent to any server?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser - the amounts you enter and the results are never transmitted or stored anywhere.
