Tipping Etiquette Tips

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip?
In the US, 15-20% is standard for table service at restaurants, 10-15% in many other countries, and some cultures expect no tip at all. The quick chips on this page cover the common ranges - adjust the slider for anything in between.
How is the tip calculated?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage as a decimal: a $86.50 bill at 20% means a $17.30 tip and a $103.80 total. If you split it, each person's share is the total divided by the party size.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette guides differ. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the strict-minimum view; tipping on the full total is common because the difference is small. Use the Remove Tax mode of a sales tax calculator first if you want the pre-tax bill.
How does the split work with round-up?
Each person's total is rounded up to the next whole currency unit, and the tip absorbs the difference - so the restaurant always receives at least the full bill plus tip, and nobody owes cents.
Is my bill amount sent to any server?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser - what you enter never leaves your device.
